Accreditation in the asp Expert Database for Competitive Sports (EDL)

The landscape of sports psychology training is undergoing a dynamic development process, resulting in a variety of different training or study programs. This diversity requires a nuanced evaluation of the individual training or study programs, along with their content and framework conditions.

At the same time, accreditation for the EDL is tied to defined criteria. Below, the permissible training paths and the corresponding minimum requirements are presented. All participants who were admitted before the new regulation comes into effect in November 2025 will retain their status.

The purpose of the asp expert database for competitive sports is focused on sports psychology work in organized competitive sports.

1)   asp-Curriculum

The Association for Sports Psychology (asp) offers a postgraduate curriculum "Sports Psychology Coaching and Training in Competitive Sports" . The certification courses are conducted by the Center of Mental Excellence (CME) under an asp license.

The CME offers two forms of participation: full attendance and guest attendance.
Only the full hearing audience entitled to accreditation on the EDL after successful completion. A university degree from the German Association for Sports Science is a prerequisite for this (dvs) or from the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP) accredited M. Sc. in Sports Science or Psychology, the one on a corresponding B.Sc. is based on these two subjects. The accreditation fee is already included in the training costs.

Accreditation for the EDL

First, please send your CME completion certificate as well as your M.Sc. diploma to the office of asp in a PDF: office@asp-sportpsychology.org, Anja Kröger

As soon as your documents are complete, the asp certificate "Sport Psychological Expert" will be issued to you, and you will be accredited in the EDL.

Important: The submission of complete documents can take place year-round.

2) University Education

As an alternative to the postgraduate asp curriculum, accreditation in the EDL can be achieved through sports psychology master's programs, provided they are from a university recognized by the dvs- or respectively. BDP-accredited B. Sc. in Sports Science or Psychology based on (see above).

Equivalent and partially equivalent master's programs are distinguished.

a) Equivalent degree programs

The following sports psychology master's programs are currently considered equivalent to the asp curriculum and allow for (taking into account the aforementioned academic criteria) after successful completion, a direct admission to the EDL.

  • Applied Sports Psychology (M.A.) at Martin Luther University Halle
  • Sports Psychology (M.Sc.) at BSP Business School Berlin

Accreditation for the EDL

First, please send your Bachelor's and Master's degree certificate to the office of asp in a PDF: office@asp-sportpsychology.org

As soon as your documents are complete, you will receive a fee of €250 (plus 19% VAT)The asp certificate "Sports Psychology Expert" will be issued, and you will be accredited in the EDL.

Important: The submission of complete documents can take place year-round.

b) Equivalent degree programs

The following sports psychology master's programs are currently (as of 11/25) considered partially equivalent to the asp curriculum.

  • Psychology in Sport and Exercise (M.Sc.) at DSHS Cologne 
  • Sport and Exercise Psychology (M.Sc.) at the University of Leipzig

Here not mediated Study content can be made up at BSP Berlin, MLU Halle-Wittenberg, or CME (only applicable for Cologne). The practical and super-vision modules can also be made up privately. After that, accreditation in the EDL can also take place.

Accreditation for the EDL

First, please send the following documents in a PDF format to the office of asp: officeasp-sportpsychologie.org

  1. Bachelor's and Master's degree certificate
  2. Excel table (as PDF) with the made up forSupervision and intervision hours
  3. Confirmations signed by the supervisors on official letterhead the made-up supervision and intervision hours
  4. Excel table (as PDF) with the made up forPractice hours in the respective facilities
  5. Confirmations signed on official letterhead by managing individuals the practical hours

As soon as your documents are complete, you will be issued the asp certificate "Sports Psychology Expert" for a fee of €250 (plus 19% VAT), and you will be accredited in the EDL.

Important: Complete documents will only be accepted during the periods of February 15–28 and August 15–31. Documents submitted outside these deadlines cannot be considered for the next examination. The examination and, ideally, accreditation for the EDL will take place in the following March or September. Feedback on the examination results will be provided by no later than April 30 or October 31 of the year.
