The history of asp

asp – this is the Association for Sport Psychology e.V. The asp was founded in 1969 and serves as the interest group for sport psychology in the German-speaking region. With currently 600 members, it is a coalition of researchers, practitioners, and those interested in sport psychology.

Its goal is to promote and further develop sport psychology in the German-speaking world in all its facets. It sees its tasks particularly in the following areas:

  • Promoting sport psychological research and applied sport psychological work with coaches and athletes,
  • Networking members working in sport psychology, both within and outside the organization,
  • Organizing conferences, workshops, theme days, and congresses,
  • Supporting the next generation of sport psychologists,
  • Awarding prizes,
  • Providing statements on issues related to sport psychology,
  • Representing the interests of sport psychology at national and international levels.

The association is a member of the Fédération Européenne des Sports et des Activités Corporelles (FEPSAC), the European representation of sport psychology, and the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP; @issponline). Additionally, the asp maintains numerous collaborations: it represents a section in the German Association for Sport Science (dvs; @dvs_sportwissenschaft) and cooperates with the Austrian Federal Network for Sport Psychology (ÖBS), the Swiss Association of Sport Psychology (SASP), the Sport Psychology Group of the German Society for Psychology (DGPS), Athleten Deutschland, MentalGestärkt, the German Football Association (DFB), and the Sport Psychology Section of the Professional Association of Austrian Psychologists (BÖP) as well as the Professional Association of German Psychologists (BDP).
