Information on Preregistrations

The following recommendations for preregistration were developed by the Open Science Initiative at the University of Münster and adopted by SIG Open Science of the asp: “Preregistration involves specifying research questions, hypotheses, methods, and analysis protocols before conducting a study. Ideally, every study should be preregistered, and in the preregistration, hypotheses and/or exploratory questions should be clearly distinguished and labeled as such. This can occur at various times (before, during, or after data collection). The most desirable scenario is preregistration before data collection; however, what is crucial is the transparent handling of the chosen approach. Preregistrations can vary from very brief to very detailed formats. In the form of so-called preregistered reports, detailed preregistrations can be submitted as papers to an increasing number of journals before data collection.”
