In-person training: Perfectionism in performance and high-performance sports – Theory, research, and application

Perfectionism in sports is an ambiguous construct in the context of competitive sports for various reasons. On one hand, so-called “Mixed Perfectionists” are capable of setting very ambitious goals and pursuing them sustainably. On the other hand, they also tend to react negatively when they do not achieve their demanding goals. For this reason, athletes need this personality trait (ambitious goals) on one hand, but they also need skills to manage the dysfunctional side of perfectionism.

In this day event, we will first outline the theory behind the development of this trait and present the current state of research on the topic in relation to performance delivery. In the second part of the training, we will present methods and interventions that help athletes cope with these negative emotions. The intervention techniques range from more classical sports psychology techniques derived from cognitive psychology to methods from hypnotherapy (Milton Erickson).
